Expert meeting organized by FAO, ICRAF and IUFRO to boost the international agenda on Forests and Water

Experts from different backgrounds gathered in Kunming (province of Yunnan, China) on 24-26 March to exchange views on a possible agenda to address the future course of international action on forests and water.

Discussion about the agenda was based on the main outcomes of the numerous meetings on forests and water that have taken place during recent years, the recommendations of which have been synthesized in a recent document, entitled 'Forests and Water: International Momentum and Action', by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

During the three days, representatives from different universities, research institutes, the private sector, NGOs and other international organizations and political processes, FOREST EUROPE among them, shared their experience and knowledge on forests and water research, policy and application. They also worked on the design of a roadmap for the suggested implementation of the discussed agenda.

This international expert meeting, entitled 'Forests and Water: From Research to Application', was a joint initiative of the FAO, the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), and the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO).

The recognition of the close interrelation between forests and water, and the need for further work on this topic is also shared by FOREST EUROPE. FOREST EUROPE signatories committed in 2007 to undertake consistent action to address the sustainable management of forests in relation to water, as well as the coordination of policies on forests and water, when they endorsed the Warsaw Resolution 2 on 'Forests and Water' during the Fifth FOREST EUROPE Ministerial Conference.
